Former Defence Spokesman, Wife Kidnapped in Katsina

Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, and his wife have been abducted by suspected gunmen in Katsina State.

Military authorities confirmed on Saturday that efforts were underway to secure the couple’s freedom following the incident, which occurred while they were travelling to the state.

A senior military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said security agencies had been alerted and were working to rescue the retired officer and his wife.

According to information shared among military veterans, the abduction took place in Matazu Local Government Area. The attackers reportedly intercepted the couple during their journey and whisked them away to an unknown destination.

The report further indicated that the couple’s driver managed to escape despite sustaining a gunshot wound during the attack. Their vehicle, a red Peugeot 406, was later recovered and taken to a police facility in Matazu.

The kidnapping has generated concern within military circles, given Abubakar’s previous role as the Nigerian military’s chief spokesperson.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the police nor other security agencies had released an official statement on the incident.

Investigations are ongoing as authorities intensify efforts to locate the victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.
