In a candid discussion, Nollywood actress Jemima Osunde revealed how filmmakers are increasingly pressuring actors to build a strong social media presence in order to secure roles.

Speaking with her colleague Jammal Ibrahim, Osunde explained that filmmakers now demand actors to act as content creators on social media before considering them for films.

Osunde expressed her frustration: “Now, it’s as though they [filmmakers] are forcing every actor to be a social media content creator before casting them. It’s as if you must dance on the internet to get roles. Why?”

She continued, “It’s like if you’re not an actor with a strong social media presence, we’re not casting you because we need you to sell our film. That shouldn’t be the actor’s job.”

Jammal Ibrahim echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the role of good management in navigating this trend. “A good manager would look at you and say, ‘Okay, this is your personality. How can we work with who you are to make you better?’” he said.

The actress made it clear that she would not be part of any film promotion that forces her to dance or perform stunts that do not align with her true self. “I don’t want to look stupid on screen. It’s just not my personality,” Osunde stated.

The growing pressure on Nigerian actors to maintain an online presence has sparked debate about the evolving demands of the industry.
