The Federal Government has announced plans for a low-key celebration of Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary, with President Bola Tinubu expected to address Nigerians on October 1.

The programme is being coordinated by an inter-ministerial committee inaugurated by the government in Abuja and chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

Akume said the anniversary would provide an opportunity to remember the contributions of Nigerians who played key roles in the country’s struggle for independence and to reflect on the nation’s progress since 1960.

He added that the celebration would also highlight the Federal Government’s reforms and achievements while recognising the socio-economic difficulties facing the country.

According to the government’s programme, activities will begin with a World Press Conference on September 24.

A Juma’at service will follow on September 25, while an interdenominational church service is scheduled for September 27.

The activities will continue with an Independence Day public lecture on September 30 before Tinubu delivers a nationwide broadcast on October 1.

The committee includes several members of the Federal Executive Council and senior government officials, including the Ministers of Finance, Information, Interior, Foreign Affairs, the Federal Capital Territory, and Budget and Economic Planning.

Also serving on the committee are the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and presidential advisers responsible for policy coordination, information and strategy, and media and public communications.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, Director-General of the Department of State Services, Adeola Ajayi, and Commander of the Guards Brigade, Adebisi Onasanya, are among other officials on the committee.

Akume directed members of the committee to work quickly on the arrangements, given the limited period before the October 1 anniversary.
