The Federal Government has announced it will now spend N17 billion on the reconstruction of the Iddo Bridge in Lagos, following a reduction from the initial N27 billion proposal.
Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, shared the update during an inspection of the site on Friday. He explained that the cost was negotiated down after discussions with construction firm Julius Berger Nigeria Plc., which he commended for its cooperation under new leadership.
Umahi revealed that the bridge had been significantly weakened by a fire that damaged three of its spans. The incident was linked to illegal occupants who had set up makeshift structures beneath the bridge, bringing in chemicals and lighting fires that led to the damage.
Due to the extent of the destruction, the government has decided to go beyond basic repairs and carry out a major reconstruction of the bridge. This will include raising the clearance height from its current 4.5 metres to 5.6 metres to reduce the risk of further impact from heavy trucks and unauthorized structures.
The minister also made it clear that no one would be allowed to live under the bridge again, stressing the importance of protecting lives and infrastructure. He warned against future misuse of public assets and affirmed the government’s commitment to responsible spending and safety.
