The Federal Government has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of individuals accused of sexual assault during the Alue-Do-Festival in Ozoro, Delta State.

Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, issued the directive after a video went viral on social media showing alleged harassment and assault of women during the festival, locally known as the “Festival of Fertility.”

Expressing deep concern over the incidents, Sulaiman-Ibrahim commended the swift response of the Delta State Police Command and demanded a thorough, transparent investigation to ensure all perpetrators are identified and held accountable.

“No cultural or traditional practice can excuse sexual violence. Sexual assault is a criminal offense, and every allegation must be investigated under the law,” she said, highlighting protections under the Nigerian Constitution and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP Act).

The minister confirmed that the government will work closely with the Delta State Ministry of Women Affairs to provide victims with medical care, psychological support, and legal assistance. Efforts will also target engagement with traditional leaders and community stakeholders to prevent future occurrences.

Members of the public have been urged to cooperate with authorities to ensure justice is served and similar incidents do not happen again.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the safety, dignity, and rights of women and girls across the country.
