Nigeria government Wednesday hailed the election of Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, the first female President of the Republic of Namibia.

Nandi-Ndaitwah Nandi-Ndaitwah, 72, who is the current vice president was declared the winner in the results released by the country’s electoral commission showed on Tuesday.

Her victory will extend SWAPO’s 34 years in power since it led Namibia to independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990.

She received roughly 57% of valid votes in the presidential race, according to a breakdown given by the Electoral Commission of Namibia.

The federal government in a statement signed by the Spokesperson Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said it looks forward to strengthen relations with Namibia.

The statement reads: “The Federal Republic of Nigeria congratulates Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on her historic election as the first female President of the Republic of Namibia. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is the current Vice President, and her electoral victory as confirmed by the Electoral Commission of Namibia, will extend the ruling SWAPO’s reign in power since independence.

“The people of Namibia have indeed voted for stability. Therefore, the Government of Nigeria looks forward to further strengthening our historic, strong, and vibrant relationship during her tenure in office for the benefit of our people.”
