The Federal Government has praised the Super Eagles for their strong showing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, following the team’s bronze medal victory over Egypt.
In a congratulatory message released on Saturday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, applauded the national team for their determination and resilience throughout the tournament, describing their performance as a moment of pride for Nigerians at home and abroad.
According to the minister, the Super Eagles demonstrated courage, unity and belief from the group stages to the end of the competition in Morocco, adding that the players did more than compete on the pitch as they inspired millions of fans across the country and in the diaspora.
He noted that the bronze medal further strengthens Nigeria’s long-standing record in AFCON history and reflects the team’s discipline and fighting spirit, especially in matches against tough opponents.
The minister also commended the coaches, backroom staff and players for their commitment and sacrifice, stressing that their collective effort reinforces Nigeria’s reputation as one of Africa’s football powerhouses.
While acknowledging that the team narrowly missed out on the top prize, Idris urged the players to take pride in the achievement and use it as motivation for future competitions, assuring them of the nation’s appreciation and support.
Nigeria secured third place after defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties in the playoff match played at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca. The encounter ended without goals in regulation time before goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged as the hero during the shootout, making crucial saves to seal the victory.
The result marked Nigeria’s ninth third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations and preserved the Super Eagles’ perfect record in third-place playoff matches.
