The Federal Government has issued a strong warning to Nigerians about deceptive recruitment schemes aimed at luring citizens into fighting in foreign conflicts.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Federal Government of Nigeria said intelligence reports and media findings show that unsuspecting Nigerians are being targeted with false promises of lucrative jobs, security roles, study opportunities, and quick migration pathways.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, many victims are reportedly pressured into signing military-related contracts written in unfamiliar languages before being transported to active conflict zones. Upon arrival, their passports and travel documents are allegedly seized, leaving them stranded and vulnerable.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, expressed concern over the trend, noting that such activities put lives at serious risk and may breach both Nigerian and international laws against mercenary involvement.
She stressed that Nigerians should avoid any offer that involves participating in armed conflicts abroad unless it is officially approved through government channels.
Security sources revealed that recruiters often use incentives such as signing bonuses, high monthly pay, and even the promise of foreign citizenship to attract young people. In many cases, intermediaries arrange travel using tourist or non-military visas, concealing the true nature of the mission.
The Federal Government said it is responding to the threat by directing Nigerian embassies and missions overseas to increase consular monitoring and issue regular warnings to citizens. Authorities at home are also working with international partners to track and dismantle recruitment networks behind the schemes.
The ministry further called on parents, guardians, and community leaders to educate young Nigerians about the dangers of suspicious foreign offers.
Citizens were advised to verify overseas job or study opportunities through official government platforms and report any doubtful approaches.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting Nigerians at home and abroad, the government warned that no citizen should fall victim to exploitation or trafficking linked to foreign armed conflicts.
