The Lagos state government has issued a traffic advisory ahead of the commencement of expansion joint replacement works on the Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
In a statement issued on Monday, Bolanle Ogunlola, director of public affairs at the Lagos ministry of transportation, said the rehabilitation project would be carried out by the federal ministry of works.
Ogunlola said the repair work will begin on Tuesday and last for two weeks, noting that the existing four-lane carriageway would be temporarily reduced to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch to create a safe work zone for the repairs.
She said motorists should expect partial traffic disruptions around the Kara axis during the period.
“The project is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, July 28 for a period of two weeks,” the statement reads.
“Consequently, motorists are advised to expect partial traffic disruptions around the Kara axis during the repair period.
“Motorists are urged to exercise patience, obey traffic regulations, and cooperate with traffic management officials deployed along the corridor.”
Ogunlola said moderate traffic is expected around the Fatgbems Turn as some motorists make U-turns or seek alternative routes to avoid delays.
She advised road users to plan their journeys in advance, consider alternative routes where possible and comply with traffic advisories to minimise delays.
She, however, said traffic heading towards Ibadan beyond the Fatgbems Turn is expected to flow with minimal disruption.
Ogunlola added that the rehabilitation work is aimed at improving the safety of the bridge for the benefit of motorists and other road users.
She thanked the public for its understanding and cooperation during the repair period.
