A group of ex-militants in the Niger Delta has threatened to shut down oil facilities in the region if their demands are not met. The group, Niger Delta United Group of Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) Phase 3 Ex-Agitators, claims they were excluded from the Presidential Amnesty Programme despite meeting the requirements.
They are demanding inclusion in the program without interference from state governments and fulfillment of promises made by the federal government.
The ex-militants had issued an ultimatum to shut down critical oil infrastructures in the Niger Delta region, citing the government’s failure to fulfill its promises. However, after interventions from PAP officials and other government agencies, the group temporarily called off the planned protest. The threat highlights the ongoing tensions in the Niger Delta region, where militant groups have long complained about the lack of benefits from oil wealth and poor living conditions
The Niger Delta region has experienced various forms of violence and unrest over the years, with militant groups frequently threatening to disrupt oil production.
In 2022, the Niger Delta United Group of PAP Phase 3 Ex-Agitators threatened to shut down oil facilities if their demands were not met, while in 2025, the Niger Delta Rescue Movement warned of disrupting oil production if Rivers State’s allocation was withheld
