The Delta State Police Command has issued a warning to residents that wearing indecent clothing could lead to penalties under the state’s Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law. The police announced this via their official X account, emphasizing that some laws are often overlooked and they will regularly share reminders to keep the public informed.
According to the announcement, anyone caught wearing revealing or inappropriate clothing in public—whether going to work, school, or other places—may face a fine of ₦50,000 or be required to perform community service.
The VAPP Law, domesticated in Delta State in 2020 and originally signed at the federal level in 2015, aims to protect people from various forms of violence and harmful practices. Apart from addressing indecent dressing, the law also covers offenses such as female genital mutilation, harmful widowhood customs, domestic violence, forced eviction, and neglect of dependents.
Specifically, Section 29 of the Delta State VAPP Law defines indecent exposure as intentionally revealing any private part in public and prescribes penalties including a fine of up to ₦50,000 or community service.
The police’s recent statement serves as a reminder for residents to dress appropriately and avoid breaking the law, as the state government is serious about enforcing these regulations.
