Dangote Transport has launched a Driver Monitoring Control Room at its operational base in Ibese, Ogun State, to strengthen road safety and improve the supervision of its truck drivers across Nigeria.
The new facility allows transport officials to track drivers while they are on the road and receive alerts when potentially dangerous driving behaviour is detected. The system is expected to help the company intervene quickly and prevent incidents before they occur.
Speaking during a media tour of the facility, Head of Operations, Dangote Transport, Ibese, David Idiege, said the initiative was part of the company’s ongoing investment in technology and safety measures.
Idiege explained that Dangote Transport operates a large fleet across the country and therefore considers safety a major responsibility. He said the company was combining technology with driver training, welfare programmes and strict operational procedures to reduce road accidents.
Among the safety measures already adopted by the company are speed limiters, vehicle immobilisers, speed control systems, facial recognition technology, journey management procedures, mandatory drug and alcohol tests, compulsory rest periods and regular driver recertification.
According to Idiege, fatigue management is particularly important because tired drivers may have slower reactions and make poor decisions while driving. He said drivers are required to follow prescribed rest periods and journey schedules to ensure they remain alert.
The Head of Transport Control, Ifeanyi Ezeala, said thousands of Dangote trucks have been equipped with on-board cameras through the company’s technology partner, Nova Tracks.
He said the cameras provide live information about drivers’ activities and generate alerts when behaviour that could pose a safety risk is identified. Transport managers can then contact the affected drivers and take appropriate corrective action.
Ezeala stressed that the monitoring system was introduced primarily to prevent accidents rather than punish drivers. He said real-time information would enable the company to identify risks early and provide drivers with guidance when necessary.
Beyond road safety, he noted that the technology was also improving fleet management by providing data that could help managers make better operational decisions.
The Driver Monitoring Control Room represents the latest addition to Dangote Transport’s efforts to improve driver performance, reduce accident risks and promote safer road operations across its nationwide fleet.
