Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu arrived in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Saturday, following President Bola Tinubu’s directive to security agencies to rescue abducted victims and eliminate terrorist and bandit camps across Nigeria.
Shuaibu arrived at about 11am and proceeded to the headquarters of the Northeast Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, at Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri.
His visit came two days after the President issued the order during a security meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Minister of Defence Christopher Musa had disclosed that Tinubu instructed service chiefs and other security officials to intensify efforts to locate and rescue people held captive by terrorists and bandits.
The President also directed security agencies to ensure that no terrorist or bandit camp remained anywhere in the country.
According to Musa, Tinubu further charged the security chiefs with providing a safe environment for Nigerians to participate in the elections scheduled for January.
Although the purpose of the army chief’s visit has not been officially linked to the President’s directive, sources indicated that Shuaibu was expected to hold meetings with theatre commanders, field officers and unit commanders operating across Borno State.
The visit comes as security operations continue in the North-East, a region that has faced years of insurgency and attacks by armed groups.
Further details of the army chief’s engagements were not immediately available.
