Veteran Nigerian actor, Chiwetalu Agu, has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding singer 2Face Idibia’s recent divorce from his wife, Annie Idibia, urging singles to conduct thorough background checks before getting married.

In a viral Instagram video, Agu shared a strong message on the dangers of rushing into marriage due to societal pressures.

He warned against the mindset that marriage is a “do-or-die” affair, especially for those in toxic relationships.

“Marriage is not a do-or-die affair. If you have an abusive partner, or are in a toxic relationship, run for your life,” he said. “Divorce is better than rest in peace.”

Agu stressed that staying in unhealthy marriages, especially for reasons like children or financial security, could lead to tragic outcomes.

He recalled a heartbreaking story of a woman who was “burnt to death by her husband,” leaving her children to face an uncertain future.

“Is it the husband who killed you? Or the relatives who love their own families?” he asked, urging caution when choosing a partner.

With the rising pressures of societal expectations, Agu also warned against rushing into marriage out of fear of being left behind. “My mates are all married, but I’m still single, see you, see death,” he said, adding a heartfelt prayer for singles to make wise choices.

“Always remember to do a background check before proceeding to marry someone,” he concluded. “I pray we don’t make mistakes that will cost us our life in the name of marriage in Jesus name.”
