A Catholic bishop serving in central Mozambique has been found dead after being shot at his residence in what authorities are describing as a suspected murder with unclear motive.
Police officials said Bishop Osorio Citora Afonso, 54, was discovered with a gunshot wound to the chest at his home in Quelimane. Investigators believe he may have been hit by a single bullet, though they have yet to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Security agencies described the case as a homicide but noted that details remain limited as inquiries are still ongoing. The Episcopal authorities in Mozambique also confirmed the death, stating that the situation appeared unusual and required further investigation.
The news has drawn a strong reaction from the Vatican, where Pope Leo XIV expressed deep sorrow over the killing, describing it as a serious act of violence against a senior church figure.
Mozambique’s president, Daniel Chapo, also conveyed condolences, calling the bishop’s death a significant loss to both the church and the nation.
Afonso, who was originally from Mozambique, had served in several international assignments, including postings in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Italy. He was later appointed auxiliary bishop in Maputo in 2023 before being elevated to a diocesan role the following year. He was transferred to Quelimane in 2025.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish the motive and identify those responsible.
