President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to former Peoples Democratic Party National Chairman, Bamanga Tukur, describing him as a prominent figure who contributed to peace and national development.
Tinubu spoke through Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Tukur’s family in Yola, Adamawa State, on Thursday to convey the President’s condolences.
The President said Tukur’s death represented a loss to Nigeria, given his years of service to the country and humanity.
He described the late politician as an icon whose influence extended beyond Adamawa and the northern region to Nigeria and beyond.
Tinubu also urged the family to celebrate Tukur’s life and achievements, noting that he lived to the age of 91.
“Dying at the age of 91 is something that we are supposed to thank Allah for, for giving our father a long life,” the President said.
Shettima was received at the Yola International Airport by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri before proceeding to Tukur’s residence.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Tukur’s son, Awwal, thanked Tinubu for sending the Vice President to condole with them.
Awwal said the President’s gesture showed his recognition of Tukur’s importance and his concern for the bereaved family.
He disclosed that Tukur was born into a family of 26 children, comprising 13 boys and 13 girls, with only four siblings still alive.
According to him, the former PDP chairman had two wives and 18 children, all of whom are alive.
Tukur died in Abuja last Saturday at the age of 91 and was buried at his private residence in Yola on Sunday.v
