Mr Peter Azubuike has emerged as the new chairman of the Labour Party in Abia State, pledging to strengthen the party’s presence across all local governments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Azubuike, a grassroots politician from Obingwa Local Government Area, was chosen during the party’s state congress held at the LP secretariat in Umuahia on Saturday. His emergence followed a consensus arrangement adopted by members at the congress, replacing the outgoing chairman, Mr Emmanuel Otti.

Other officials elected into the state executive include Chuks Akanmadu as Secretary, Emenike Iroegbu as Publicity Secretary, Joy Ngozi as Treasurer and Ben Oti as Organising Secretary.

Speaking with journalists after the exercise, Azubuike expressed confidence that the party would secure victories in all elective positions across the state in 2027. He said the LP would build on what he described as the achievements of Governor Alex Otti to expand its support base.

He also downplayed claims by the All Progressives Congress that it could capture the Abia Government House in the next election cycle, insisting that the party lacks the structure to pose a serious challenge in the state.

Governor Alex Otti, who addressed party members at the congress, congratulated the new executive team and commended the organising committee for a successful exercise.

He also praised the former chairman, Emmanuel Otti, for maintaining stability within the party during periods of internal leadership challenges at the national level.
