The media team of Atiku Abubakar has dismissed speculation that his recent trip to Morocco had any political undertone, clarifying that the journey was strictly for a family wedding ceremony.
In a statement issued in Abuja, his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, explained that the former vice president travelled to Marrakech to preside over the wedding of Cherina and Muna Okey Ezeibe.
According to Shaibu, the event was purely social and personal, amid growing public interest over Atiku’s movements outside the country as political realignments continue ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He noted that the ceremony attracted relatives, friends and prominent guests from different African countries, describing it as a celebration that reflected unity, culture and longstanding relationships.
Shaibu added that the occasion held special meaning for Atiku due to his close relationship with the groom’s father, businessman Okey Ezeibe, a friendship said to span many years.
Also present at the wedding was Lassina Zerbo, father of the bride and a former Prime Minister of Burkina Faso, highlighting the cross-border ties between the two families.
While speaking at the ceremony, Atiku reportedly described marriage as a sacred bond founded on love, patience and mutual respect, offering prayers for the couple’s peaceful and prosperous future.
Shaibu stressed that the gathering, set against the backdrop of Marrakech, symbolised friendship across nations and had no connection with political consultations or coalition discussions.
Atiku, who flew the flag of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 presidential election, remains a notable figure in Nigeria’s opposition landscape as attention gradually shifts towards the next election cycle.
