Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has congratulated Arsenal FC on their English Premier League title triumph, describing the achievement as a reflection of resilience, discipline, strategic leadership, and commitment to long-term vision.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, the former vice president praised the club’s players, coaching crew, and millions of supporters across the world for what he called a remarkable and inspiring accomplishment.
Atiku said Arsenal’s rise to the summit of English football was not accidental but the outcome of years of rebuilding, planning, and consistency.
“Arsenal’s victory did not happen overnight. It is the product of years of rebuilding, disciplined planning, bold decision-making, and the courage to stay the course even when success seemed distant. These are the same principles that have guided my journey in both public life and the private sector,” he said.
The former presidential candidate drew parallels between the club’s transformation under a long-term footballing philosophy and his own economic and political ideals for Nigeria, stressing the importance of institutional reforms and youth development.
According to him, his economic blueprint has consistently focused on private-sector-led growth, job creation, and restructuring the economy to unlock productivity and prosperity.
“Like a well-managed football club, a nation must create an enabling environment where talent can thrive, innovation is rewarded, and performance is sustained,” he stated.
“My vision has always been to build an economy that works for all—driven by enterprise, strengthened by institutional reforms, and powered by the energy of our youth. Just as Arsenal invested in youth development and a clear footballing philosophy, Nigeria must invest in its people, reform its institutions, and stay committed to a coherent economic strategy.”
Arsenal’s Premier League success has generated excitement among football fans worldwide, particularly in Nigeria, where the North London club enjoys one of the largest support bases in the country.
Nigerian supporters have over the years remained loyal to the club despite several trophyless campaigns and near misses in the title race.
Atiku acknowledged this unwavering support, describing it as a reflection of the Nigerian spirit.
He said, “Their loyalty is a reflection of the enduring Nigerian spirit—hopeful, resilient, and unbreakable.”
The Wazirin Adamawa also used the occasion to encourage Nigerians not to lose faith in the nation’s future, saying meaningful change requires patience, courage, and consistency.
“Arsenal’s triumph is a powerful reminder that persistence, discipline, and an unwavering belief in one’s mission ultimately produce results. My own journey in public service has been defined by resilience, consistency, and an unshaken commitment to the Nigerian project.
“Nigerians should draw inspiration from this moment and remain hopeful that with unity, purpose, and the right leadership, the 2027 election can mark the beginning of a brighter, more prosperous, and more inclusive chapter for our nation,” he added.
The former vice president also commended Arsenal’s leadership for building what he described as a cohesive and competitive team anchored on youth development, tactical intelligence, and unity of purpose, noting that such principles are critical to national transformation.
Looking beyond domestic success, Atiku urged the club to focus on conquering Europe by winning the UEFA Champions League.
“Having conquered England, I encourage Arsenal to set their sights firmly on the UEFA Champions League. The spirit, quality, and determination that delivered the Premier League title can certainly secure a historic double. The world is watching, and millions of Nigerians are cheering you on,” he stated.
He concluded by expressing hope that Arsenal’s triumph would inspire optimism, unity, and renewed purpose among Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora.
