The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has begun strengthening its structures across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the party promising to protect the votes and mandate of its presidential candidate, Governor Seyi Makinde.
The party said the move was necessary as the incumbent Governor of Oyo State continues to enjoy growing support, particularly among young Nigerians ahead of the forthcoming polls.
APM National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, Naija News reports.
The party said Makinde’s relationship with the youths was built around actions and policies, recalling his role during the 2020 EndSARS protest.
APM said, “Governor Makinde personally joined the youths in the 2020 EndSARS protest and directed security agencies to give them adequate protection to exercise their constitutionally guaranteed right to peaceful protest.”
The party also recalled Makinde’s opposition to the suspension of 𝕏, formerly Twitter, by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government in June 2021.
“We are also not surprised that the youths are recalling that Governor Makinde spiritedly fought for them in opposing the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government’s ban on X (then Twitter) in June 2021,” the statement added.
According to the APM, Makinde had warned that the suspension would affect the livelihood of young Nigerians because of the important role the platform played in business and e-commerce.
“Governor Makinde had insisted, in an official statement, that the suspension would adversely impact the livelihood of young Nigerians as 𝕏 is more than a communication tool but occupied a strategic position as a vital platform for domestic and international e-commerce and business engagements,” the party noted.
It said it was therefore not surprised by the growing attention surrounding Makinde and his presidential ambition, saying Nigerians were beginning to distinguish between campaign promises and actual commitment to public service.
APM said, “Our Party and Presidential candidate do not take this confidence reposed in us by Nigerians for granted. We are intensifying every effort in strengthening our structures across the country to ensure that our votes and mandate are firmly protected.”
While appreciating Nigerians for their support, the party urged citizens to remain alert as the 2027 elections draw closer.
The APM said voters should not only participate in the election but should also be prepared to defend their votes through lawful means.
The party urged “citizens to be alert and get ready not only to vote but also to use every means within the ambit of law to resist any attempt by any anti-democratic force to rob them of their victory which they will surely secure with the Makinde/Daura ticket on the banner of the APM.”
