Angola has paid tribute to Nigeria’s late Head of State, General Murtala Muhammed, in recognition of his pivotal role in supporting the country’s independence and strengthening African solidarity. The ceremony, which also honoured former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Foreign Affairs Minister Professor Ibrahim Gambari, took place in Luanda as part of Angola’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations.

The awards celebrated Nigeria’s early and decisive support for Angola during its struggle against Portuguese colonial rule in the mid-1970s. Under Muhammed’s leadership, Nigeria became one of the first nations to officially recognize the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) government. In addition, the country provided financial aid, reportedly amounting to $17 million, to help Angola overcome international isolation and economic blockades.

Speaking at the event, Tangyalamba Veloso, President of the Angola–Nigeria Chamber of Commerce and Industry, highlighted Muhammed’s courage in standing against Cold War pressures and Western opposition. She recalled how the late leader personally confronted international oil companies threatening to withdraw from Angola, warning that their actions would also affect operations in Nigeria.

“Murtala Muhammed’s bold stance not only supported Angola in its time of need but also cemented Nigeria’s reputation as a moral and principled leader in Africa,” Veloso said, noting that his leadership shaped the country’s history.
