Nigeria’s sprint queen, Tobi Amusan, reaffirmed her dominance on Wednesday evening in Accra, storming to her sixth continental gold medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships.
The 29-year-old world record holder delivered a commanding performance to secure Nigeria’s first gold medal of the competition, further cementing her status as one of Africa’s greatest track athletes.
With the victory, Amusan became only the third woman in history to win three African Championships titles in the women’s 100m hurdles. She also made history as the first athlete to complete the rare double of winning both the African Championships and African Games gold medals three times each in the event.
Her triumph in Accra carried added significance as she reclaimed the continental crown she lost two years ago in Cameroon after illness forced her out of contention.
Nigeria’s Adaobi Tabugbo also impressed in the event, clinching the bronze medal to complete a memorable outing for Team Nigeria.
Having finished fifth at the last edition of the Championships, Tabugbo’s podium finish marks her first individual medal at the continental competition and signals her growing rise in African hurdling.
Amusan’s campaign, however, does not end in Accra. The Nigerian star is set to travel to China for the opening leg of the Wanda Diamond League in Shanghai/Keqiao on Saturday.
Fresh from reclaiming her African title, Amusan will now turn her attention to regaining the Diamond League crown she lost in 2024 after failing to defend the title.
