Sadiq S. Abacha, son of former Nigerian military leader General Sani Abacha, has defended his late father’s legacy in a powerful social media post, despite the continued criticism surrounding the late dictator’s regime.
In his post, Sadiq praised his father as a leader who was envied and misunderstood. He wrote, “The man Abacha—you have always been the one they envied with silent deceit. History shall remember you for being a better leader, no matter how much they try to put you down. As a son, I am most proud of you today. You indeed are the man they wish they were half of.”
Sadiq’s words came just days after former military President Ibrahim Babangida’s memoir sparked fresh discussions about Nigeria’s political history, particularly regarding the annulment of the 1993 presidential election.
In the book, Babangida claims the annulment was largely influenced by Abacha, although he states that he was not fully informed beforehand.
Despite the ongoing debate, Abacha remains a divisive figure in Nigeria’s history. While some credit his government with significant economic reforms and efforts to bolster national security, others continue to condemn his regime for corruption and human rights violations.
Adding to the controversy, Gumsu Abacha, the late general’s daughter, recently posted a one-word message on social media, calling Babangida a “Weakling,” in apparent response to his criticism of her father.
Sadiq Abacha’s post serves as a strong reminder of his commitment to defending his father’s legacy, leaving the nation to grapple with the complexities of his leadership years.
