BARCELONA striker Asisat Oshoala and Paris FC goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie are among seven Nigerian players nominated for the 2023 CAF Awards Women’s Player of the Year category.
The other Nigerians included in the long list of 30 are Rasheedat Ajibade, Christy Ucheibe, Osinachi Ohale, Tobi Payne and Uchenna Kanu, all of whom starred for the Super Falcons at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Oshoala is the holder of the award and has already won it a record five times in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2022.
Among the nominated Nigerians, Nnadozie is the only one in the running for two awards, having been earlier named among the nominees for Goalkeeper of the Year.
Nigeria have the most nominees among the 30, followed by South Africa with six and Morocco with five.
Zambia, who were at their first Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, have three nominees, while there are two from Malawi.
There are also nominated players from Ghana, Cameroon, Senegal, Namibia, Togo, Uganda and Tunisia.
The other women’s categories, including National Team of the Year which has Nigeria’s Super Falcons, were announced earlier today by the Confederation of African Football.
Three Super Falcons players — Deborah Abiodun, Tosin Demehin and Taiwo Ajakaye — are nominated for the Young Player of the Year award.
The ceremony will be held on December 11 in Marrakech, Morocco.
