Veteran Nollywood actor Jide Kosoko has revealed that he has lived with diabetes since 1996, describing his decades of experience with the condition as a reason he has become more aware of his health.
The actor made the disclosure during an interview on African-a-list, which was uploaded to YouTube on Saturday.
“I became diabetic in 1996; I understand my health better than some doctors do. Do not misquote me. I am not saying I know how to do everything, I just do not want to die,” Kosoko said.
The actor also spoke about painful experiences in his personal life, revealing that he had lost three wives. One of them, the mother of his daughter, Bidemi Kosoko, died during childbirth.
“I lost my wife during childbirth; that’s Bidemi’s mother. I have lost three wives,” he said.
Reflecting on his career, Kosoko said he began acting in theatre at the age of 10 in 1964 and established his own theatre group in 1972. He described himself as one of the pioneers of the Nigerian entertainment industry.
The veteran actor also advised parents to treat their children fairly, stressing the importance of ensuring that every child feels equally valued and loved.
On social media, Kosoko recalled that people were initially apprehensive about the platform but had since found ways to benefit from it. However, he criticised users who, in his view, share inappropriate content.
The actor’s comments offered insight into his long career, personal losses and approach to managing life with a chronic health condition.
