Elon Musk has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform X, formerly known as Twitter, into a comprehensive financial hub that will render traditional banks obsolete.

Remarkably, he aims to achieve this transformation within a mere year.

Musk divulged his vision during a company-wide meeting held on Thursday, with The Verge being the first to obtain and report on the audio recording of this significant announcement.

Although Musk had previously hinted at his intentions to introduce various financial services on X, it is clear that his aspirations have grown substantially.

In his own words, “If it involves money, it will find its home on our platform. Whether it’s currency, securities, or any financial aspect, our aim goes beyond simple transactions like ‘sending $20 to a friend.’ I’m talking about a future where traditional bank accounts become unnecessary. It would truly amaze me if we don’t have this fully implemented by the conclusion of the next year.”

The rapid rebranding of Twitter into X resonates with Musk’s original online banking project, X.com, which merged with Confinity in 2000 and subsequently evolved into PayPal. Musk firmly believes that his original vision for X.com remains entirely viable.

He reminisced, stating, “The X/PayPal product roadmap was initially penned by myself and David Sacks back in July 2000. Strangely, once PayPal transitioned under eBay’s ownership, not only did they fail to implement the rest of the plan, but they also rolled back several critical features, which seems rather perplexing.”

In essence, X’s potential could encompass services like loans, debit cards, savings, and the ability for users to send money to each other, transcending geographical boundaries, ultimately making X the go-to financial solution.
