Apple Inc. has finally made good on its much-anticipated mixed-reality headset today during the WWDC 2023 developer conference with the Vision Pro, which Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook described as a “spatial computer.”

It comes at the rather high price tag of $3,499 and ships early next year. This puts it in competition with Meta Platform Inc.’s Meta Quest Pro, priced at $1,499, which was aimed at enterprise business and professional users.

Here are 15 key features of the newly launched Apple Vision Pro mixed-reality headset include:

  1. Spatial Computing: Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook described Vision Pro as a “spatial computer,” introducing users to spatial computing.
  2. Sleek Design: The headset has a sleek, polished, and white design with flowing lines. It resembles a pair of ski goggles with a single headband for a secure fit.
  3. Mixed Reality: Vision Pro uses cameras and sensors on the front of the headset to enable mixed reality. Users can see the real world around them while apps and experiences are overlaid onto their vision, appearing to float in the world.
  4. Virtual Reality: The headset supports immersive virtual reality experiences, where the view is entirely computer-generated. Users can adjust the level of immersion by turning a digital crown on the headset.
  5. Connectivity: Vision Pro works with Bluetooth accessories such as the Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad, allowing users to set up their own workspace anywhere. It can also connect wirelessly to a Mac for a private workspace.
  6. High-Resolution Displays: The headset features two ultra-high resolution displays that deliver 23 million pixels across both eyes, equivalent to a portable 4K display. Catadioptric lenses enhance sharpness and clarity.
  7. Spatial Audio: A built-in spatial audio system adjusts sound based on the user’s environment. It uses individually amplified drivers and can be connected to AirPods via Bluetooth.
  8. External Battery: The headset has an external battery connected via a long wire to the side. The battery pack lasts approximately two hours on a single charge for portable use and can be plugged in for all-day use.
  9. User Interaction: Users can control their virtual environment using their eyes, hands, and voice. High-speed cameras and LEDs track eye movements, allowing users to interact by looking, gesturing, or using voice commands.
  10. EyeSight: The front face of the headset, called EyeSight, uses a curved OLED display to show a display of the user’s eyes to people nearby. This feature helps prevent collisions with others in the real world.
  11. 3D Memory Capture: The headset’s cameras enable users to record their memories in three dimensions, including spatial audio. Users can upload these immersive 3D memories to the cloud.
  12. Apple Silicon Chips: Vision Pro is powered by Apple silicon chips, including an M2 chip and a new R1 chip. The R1 chip processes the cameras, sensors, and microphones in real-time to stream virtual and mixed reality content.
  13. visionOS: Apple developed a new operating system named visionOS for the Vision Pro. It is built on the foundation of macOS, iOS, and iPadOS and supports mixed reality and spatial computing. It features a three-dimensional interface and compatibility with existing Apple apps.
  14. App Store: The Vision Pro has its own all-new App Store where users can discover content specifically designed for the headset. It also supports apps from other Apple operating systems.
  15. Privacy Features: Vision Pro includes Optic ID, an authentication system that analyzes the user’s iris to unlock the device. The iris scan information is securely stored in the device’s Secure Enclave.
