Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has cautioned the United States and Israel against launching fresh military attacks on the country, warning that Tehran would determine how and when to respond.
In a statement published on his official website on Saturday, Khamenei said Iran’s armed forces and citizens would decide the course of action if the country faced another military or terrorist assault.
He made the remarks during a reported meeting with senior military officials, including Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Ali Abdollahi, Army Chief Amir Hatami and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Ahmad Vahidi.
The meeting was reportedly the first between Khamenei and the military commanders since he assumed leadership.
According to the statement, the Iranian leader instructed the military chiefs to respond immediately and effectively to any threat, regardless of its scale or geographical reach.
He also directed them to revise the country’s list of potential targets to cover all physical and non-physical assets linked to what the statement described as the American-Zionist enemy.
Khamenei has not appeared publicly since taking over as supreme leader following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in US-Israeli airstrikes at the beginning of the Middle East conflict in February.
The war started on February 28, when American and Israeli forces launched attacks on Iran. Tehran subsequently retaliated with strikes against targets in several countries across the region.
The latest warning comes as diplomatic efforts continue to prevent another round of hostilities.
A Qatari delegation arrived in Tehran on Friday to hold discussions with Iranian officials. The visit followed reports that Iran had received a letter from US Vice President JD Vance.
Iranian media reported that Tehran had not yet issued a response to the communication as of Saturday.
