The United States and China have agreed to establish a direct communication channel for dealing with incidents involving artificial intelligence, following talks between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The agreement was announced by the White House after the two leaders met at a summit where AI and the growing risks associated with advanced technology were among the issues discussed.
The two countries will also launch a US-China Super Intelligence Dialogue, which will provide a platform for officials from both sides to discuss the potential benefits and risks of advanced AI systems.
According to the White House, the next meeting under the dialogue is expected to take place by November.
The countries also agreed to maintain a bilateral communication channel that can be used when AI-related incidents occur, although details on how the mechanism will operate were not immediately disclosed.
Trump had identified super intelligence as an important subject ahead of the summit, saying it would feature prominently in his discussions with Xi.
Xi, meanwhile, called for greater cooperation between the two countries in managing the development of advanced AI.
He said both nations had the capability and responsibility to ensure that AI is developed for beneficial purposes and remains under human control.
The agreement comes as the US and China compete for leadership in advanced artificial intelligence while also facing growing concerns over the potential risks posed by increasingly powerful AI systems.
