At least 27 people were killed and dozens of others injured after a passenger bus crashed into a ravine near the coastal city of Boumerdes in northern Algeria on Friday.
Algeria’s civil defence agency said the accident happened around 9:40 a.m. local time, prompting emergency teams to rush to the scene to rescue passengers and provide medical assistance.
Authorities said the bus left the road for reasons that are still under investigation.
The crash is one of Algeria’s deadliest road accidents in recent years. In August 2025, 18 people died when a bus plunged into a ravine near Algiers, while another 14 people were killed in a separate bus accident in the southern Bechar region later that year.
Road safety officials say speeding and other forms of human error remain the leading causes of traffic accidents in the country. Official data show that 3,838 people were killed and more than 37,000 injured in road crashes across Algeria in 2025.
