Britain’s King Charles III will publicly disclose details of his personal tax payments for the first time as part of efforts to increase transparency around royal finances.

Buckingham Palace said the move was initiated by the King and reflects ongoing efforts to modernise the monarchy and make its financial affairs easier for the public to understand.

The tax details will be released alongside the royal household’s annual financial report later this week, making Charles the first reigning British monarch to reveal such information.

Although British monarchs are exempt from paying certain taxes, the royal family has voluntarily paid some taxes for decades. The practice began with the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1993 and has continued under King Charles.

The announcement comes amid growing public scrutiny of royal finances, particularly following recent controversies involving Prince Andrew. Palace officials said the disclosure is intended to provide greater clarity while explaining the historical and constitutional framework surrounding royal funding.

Before becoming king in 2022, Charles regularly published details of his tax payments while serving as Prince of Wales.

In addition to public funding received through the Sovereign Grant, the King earns private income from the Duchy of Lancaster, a vast portfolio of land, property and investments. The estate generated £26.8 million in income during the 2024–25 financial year.

The palace said the disclosure forms part of wider efforts to ensure the monarchy remains transparent and accountable to the public.
