The United States have secured a place in the knockout rounds of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a comfortable 2–0 win over Australia in Seattle on Friday.

The co-hosts took control early in the match and were rewarded in the 11th minute when pressure inside the box forced Australian defender Cameron Burgess into turning the ball into his own net, handing the Americans the lead.

Despite missing injured star Christian Pulisic, the US side stayed in control and continued to press forward with confidence, dominating possession and stretching Australia’s defence throughout the first half.

Just before the break, the hosts doubled their advantage. Alex Freeman reacted quickest in a crowded penalty area to head home after a set-piece sequence. The goal was briefly ruled out for offside but was awarded after a VAR review.

Australia attempted to respond in the second half with several changes and a more aggressive approach, creating a few chances through Nestory Irankunda and Cristian Volpato, but they were unable to break through the US defence.

The Americans also threatened on the counterattack, with several missed opportunities to extend their lead, but they managed the game well and kept a clean sheet until the final whistle.

The result confirms the United States’ qualification for the last 32 with a game still to play, boosting their chances of finishing top of the group as the tournament progresses.
