Nigerian inmates held in a prison in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, have expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu after the Federal Government concluded a prisoner transfer agreement with Ethiopia.

In a video shared by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the inmates were seen celebrating the development, saying the agreement offers hope of returning to Nigeria to complete their sentences.

The deal, signed between both countries this week, allows eligible Nigerian and Ethiopian prisoners to be transferred to their home countries to serve the remainder of their jail terms, in line with agreed legal conditions.

According to the Federal Government, more than 100 Nigerians currently serving various sentences in Ethiopia are expected to benefit from the arrangement once necessary procedures are completed.

Officials said the agreement was facilitated through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation as part of efforts to improve the welfare of Nigerians incarcerated abroad and strengthen bilateral relations.

Authorities added that the transfer process will be carried out in phases, depending on eligibility and compliance with both countries’ legal requirements.
