Ghana has officially raised concerns with Canada after authorities refused to grant a visa to national team midfielder Thomas Partey ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The Ghanaian government, through its foreign ministry, described the decision as unfair and disproportionate, arguing that it should not be based on unresolved legal allegations. Partey, who plays for Villarreal and previously featured for Arsenal, is currently facing serious criminal charges in the United Kingdom but has denied all accusations.

Officials in Accra have sent a formal diplomatic protest to Canadian authorities, urging them to reconsider the decision and allow the player entry for national team duties. Ghana maintains that the move could negatively affect the integrity of sporting participation if based solely on pending court matters.

World football governing body FIFA has reportedly indicated that the midfielder will miss Ghana’s opening group match scheduled in Canada due to the visa issue. However, he is still expected to be available for other group-stage fixtures taking place in the United States.

The situation has sparked wider debate over the balance between immigration rules and international sporting commitments, especially as teams finalize preparations for the tournament.
