Congolese music star Fally Ipupa has been awarded one of the highest national distinctions in the Democratic Republic of Congo, becoming a knight of the National Order of the Leopard.

The honour, approved by the country’s presidency, is reserved for individuals considered to have made outstanding contributions to national life. Officials praised the singer for helping promote Congolese music, especially rumba, and for boosting the country’s cultural visibility worldwide.

The award places him in the same category as late music legend Papa Wemba, who previously received the same recognition during his lifetime.

Ipupa, who began his career working with leading Congolese acts before launching a successful solo career, expressed gratitude for the recognition. He said the achievement reflects not just his personal journey but also the support of fans and the wider Congolese community.

Over the years, he has released multiple albums and built a strong international following, performing across Africa, Europe, and beyond. His recent projects have also broken records, including strong chart performances in France and major sold-out concerts in Europe.

The singer said the honour is a reminder of the strength of Congolese culture and encouraged young people to remain committed to their ambitions regardless of their background.

The recognition comes during a busy period in his career, with ongoing international tours and upcoming performances planned in major venues abroad.
