The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has officially picked its 2023 presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, as its flagbearer for the 2027 general election following a consensus decision at its national convention held in Bauchi State on Saturday.

The decision was reached after party leaders and delegates agreed on his nomination during the convention, which also produced new national officers to steer the party’s affairs ahead of the elections. As part of the leadership changes, Professor Sadiq Gombe was endorsed as the new National Chairman of the party.

Adebayo, while addressing party members after his emergence, criticised the current economic situation in the country, saying many Nigerians are facing severe hardship despite working hard. He argued that economic pressures have made life difficult for families, affecting education, healthcare, and general living conditions.

He also raised concerns about governance and democratic practice in the country, warning against the concentration of political power.

According to him, Nigeria needs a stronger and more competitive multi-party system that allows citizens to drive meaningful change through the ballot.

The convention also highlighted the SDP’s repositioning efforts as it prepares for the 2027 elections under the platform of the Social Democratic Party. Party leaders said internal reforms had strengthened the party’s structure and restored confidence among members.

Newly elected officials pledged to provide credible leadership and build a stronger opposition platform. They also emphasised transparency, discipline, and commitment to democratic principles as key priorities moving forward.

With its leadership now in place, the SDP says it is aiming to present itself as a viable alternative in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
