Former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has affirmed his right to move freely across Nigeria, emphasizing that no individual or group can prevent him from visiting any part of the country.
Obi made the statement in response to recent warnings on social media advising him against travelling to certain regions, following an incident in Benin City. Speaking during a visit to Peter University, he stressed that freedom of movement is a constitutional guarantee for all Nigerians.
“I am a Nigerian. I have the right to go wherever I choose in this country, and nobody can take that away from me,” Obi said.
Despite the controversy in Benin City, Obi said he continued with his planned visit to Rivers State, highlighting that he would not allow intimidation to influence his engagements nationwide.
Looking ahead, Obi confirmed his intention to run in the 2027 presidential election under the African Democratic Congress platform. He described his decision as motivated by a commitment to reform and improving governance, rather than personal ambition.
“We need a system where talent and hard work, not connections, determine who succeeds,” he said.
Obi also addressed his departure from the Labour Party, citing internal disputes and concerns over the handling of court rulings as reasons for his switch to a new political platform ahead of the next elections.
