The United Kingdom will stop issuing physical visa documents to visitors who require entry permits, moving entirely to a digital visa system from February 25, 2026.

The announcement was made by UK Visas and Immigration, which confirmed that eligible travellers will instead receive an electronic visa, known as an eVisa. This digital record must be accessed through a UKVI online account before travelling.

According to the agency, the eVisa serves as an official digital proof of a person’s identity and immigration status. It outlines details such as the type of visa granted, length of stay, and conditions attached to the permit, including whether the holder is allowed to work or study in the UK.

The new system replaces all remaining physical immigration documents. While biometric residence permits have already been phased out, the eVisa will now also take the place of biometric residence cards, passport visa stickers, and traditional entry stamps.

Travellers will typically receive their eVisa once their visa or immigration application is approved. After issuance, users can log into their UKVI account to view their status, generate a share code to confirm their right to work or rent accommodation, and link their passport or travel document for border checks.

The UK Government clarified that creating a UKVI account is mandatory to access the eVisa, but stressed that the process is free. Applicants are not required to pay any fee to set up the account or to view their digital visa.

Officials say the move is part of a broader effort to modernise the UK’s immigration system, improve security, and make visa management more convenient for travellers worldwide.
