President Bola Tinubu has dismissed claims that Christians or Muslims are being targeted for killings in Nigeria, saying the country’s insecurity is driven by criminality and extremism, not religious persecution.
He made the statement in Abuja while opening the Nasrul-Lahi-l-Fatih Society (NASFAT) 8th Biennial Conference and Annual General Meeting, themed “Building Resilience in a Changing World: The Role of Faith and Community.” Tinubu was represented at the event by the Attorney General, Lateef Fagbemi.
Addressing recent allegations, including claims by former U.S. President Donald Trump that Christians were being persecuted in Nigeria, Tinubu called such reports “unfounded” and potentially harmful, warning they could inflame tensions and disrupt national unity.
“Nigeria does not foster or tolerate policies targeting any religious group. Muslims and Christians alike have been victims of terrorism. What we face is criminality and extremism, challenges we are working tirelessly to overcome,” Tinubu said.
The President urged Nigerians to reject divisive narratives, whether internal or external, and highlighted the nation’s strength in its diversity. He also praised NASFAT’s role in promoting moderation, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence, describing such efforts as essential for national unity.
Tinubu concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting every citizen and ensuring religious freedom across thecountry.
