President Bola Tinubu has welcomed Nigeria’s successful re-election to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council, describing it as a significant affirmation of the country’s maritime leadership on the global stage.

According to Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Nigeria secured a seat in Category C of the IMO Council for the 2026–2027 term during the organisation’s General Assembly held in London on Friday, ending a 14-year absence.

Tinubu highlighted that the election reflects international confidence in Nigeria’s dedication to maritime safety, security, and environmental protection, as well as adherence to globally recognised shipping standards.

The President commended Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, officials of the ministry, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and the country’s diplomatic team for their professionalism and strategic engagement throughout the campaign.

He further noted that Nigeria’s renewed position on the council complements his administration’s broader objectives to expand the blue economy, strengthen maritime infrastructure, intensify anti-piracy measures, and establish the nation as a key regional shipping hub.

Assuring the global maritime community of Nigeria’s readiness to contribute positively, Tinubu emphasized the country’s commitment to promoting safer oceans, cleaner waterways, efficient shipping systems, and collaborative development of innovative maritime regulations.

The President expressed gratitude to member states for their support and pledged that Nigeria will honour the confidence placed in it through sustained leadership and active participation in advancing international maritime goals.
