The Federal Government of Nigeria has rejected allegations that it deserted Nigerians deported from the United States via Ghana, stating instead that the deportees are currently undergoing profiling in Togo.

According to the report, some deportees claimed they were “dumped” in Togo after being deported to Ghana. The federal government, however, insists the Nigerian deportees are being properly managed and not abandoned.

The controversy comes amid broader debate over the U.S. practice of deporting individuals—especially undocumented migrants—to third countries. Ghana has agreed to receive West African nationals deported from the U.S., including Nigerians, under an understanding that such nationals can enter Ghana visa-free.

Meanwhile, human rights lawyers have challenged Ghana’s claim that all deportees have been returned to their home countries, noting that some remain in detention in Ghana long after their arrival.

Questions remain about transparency and the safeguards in place to protect deportees from persecution or ill treatment in their home countries.
