The city of Enugu bade farewell on Saturday to one of Nigeria’s greatest football figures, Christian Chukwu, popularly known as Chairman. The former Super Eagles captain and coach, who passed away on April 12 at the age of 74, was buried in his hometown of Obe, Nkanu West Local Government Area.

The burial capped nearly two weeks of tributes that began with memorial events in Lagos and Enugu. Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, described Chukwu as a man of humility and discipline whose influence reached far beyond the pitch. He assured the family that the state would ensure Chukwu’s legacy is permanently honoured.

Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ike, delivered the homily, praising Chukwu as both a resilient leader in football and a devoted family man. He recalled Chukwu’s remarkable triumphs with Enugu Rangers and the Nigerian national team, highlighting his role in leading the Super Eagles to their first Africa Cup of Nations victory in 1980.

Dignitaries in attendance included former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, President of the Nigeria Football Federation Ibrahim Gusau (represented by George Aluo), Senator Victor Umeh, as well as past teammates, sports administrators, and religious leaders.

Chukwu’s son, Chukwuemeka Jr., spoke on behalf of the family, expressing gratitude to all who honoured his father.

Born in Enugu, Chukwu rose to prominence as one of the finest defenders in African football. Beyond his playing days, he managed both Enugu Rangers and the Super Eagles, earning respect for his discipline, generosity, and passion for the game.

Over his lifetime, he received multiple honours, including the national award in 1980 after Nigeria’s Nations Cup victory and the African Football Legend Award in 2012.

His burial ceremony was not only a solemn farewell but also a celebration of a man whose impact on Nigerian and African football will endure for generations.
