The All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship primaries for Lagos State Local Government elections are underway at the party’s secretariat in Ikeja, with heightened security measures in place.
As the primaries kicked off on Saturday, the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission confirmed that elections for the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas will take place on July 12.
The venue, under strict surveillance, has seen a significant police presence. “The security measures are in place to ensure a smooth process,” said Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Moshood Jimoh, who was observed monitoring the security situation.
Additional security support is provided by the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Department of State Security.
The heavy security presence has led to restricted vehicular movement around the venue, causing gridlock on ACME Road and neighboring streets. Traffic management officials were also present to mitigate the disruption.
“We have ensured that the delegates coming from far distances are included in the accreditation process,” said Mr. Babatunde Ogala, Chairman of the APC Electoral Committee.
Despite the initial delay, he reassured the media that everything was in place for a transparent and fair process.
Hundreds of delegates from across the state are being screened for accreditation as part of the ongoing primaries.
