The Nigerian government is in the process of vetting candidates for diplomatic positions in its numerous missions worldwide.
Among those under scrutiny are former deputy Governor of Lagos State, Otunba Femi Pedro, Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode alongside other prominent figures.
Sources confirmed that the vetting process is ongoing, with the Department of State Services (DSS) conducting security checks. One official explained, “They’re already doing security checks with DSS. When they have cleared security checks, we will release the list.”
The delays in finalising appointments have been attributed to funding constraints, with over $1 billion required to address critical infrastructure issues in Nigerian embassies.
According to an official, “The main money is CAPEX. By the time they put the cost together to fix the issues, it is running to almost $1bn.”
Despite these challenges, the process continues and a final list is expected to be released by the end of April.
