Myanmar’s ruling junta has declared a week of national mourning for the victims of the recent earthquake that has claimed over 1,700 lives.
The mourning period, which began today, will run until April 6, with national flags flown at half-mast.
In an official statement, the junta expressed their sorrow, stating, “The government and the people of Myanmar stand in solidarity with the families and communities affected by this tragedy.”
The 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar and Thailand, causing widespread destruction. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with teams working around the clock to recover survivors and provide aid to those impacted.
The tragedy follows a significant building collapse in Bangkok, as rescue workers continue their efforts to save lives in both countries.
