The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed claims circulating in the media that its ongoing investigation into an alleged money laundering case is connected to prominent political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
In a statement released on Friday, the EFCC clarified that the investigation is centered strictly on criminal allegations of conspiracy and money laundering, with no ties to any political actors.
“The EFCC’s case has no connection, direct or indirect, with any politician or political transaction. The Commission remains non-partisan and committed to its mandate of fighting corruption,” the statement read.
The investigation, which began in 2022, gained momentum after the suspect’s attempt to obtain an injunction to prevent her arrest and prosecution was overturned by the Federal High Court in February 2025.
The court also upheld an interim forfeiture order on the suspect’s assets, alleged to be proceeds of crime.
Despite media speculation, the EFCC stressed that its actions are solely grounded in the law, reaffirming its commitment to tackling economic and financial crimes in Nigeria.
The Commission urged the public to disregard any claims of political interference and continue supporting its work.
EFCC’s investigation remains ongoing, with the agency emphasizing its focus on upholding justice and integrity in the fight against corruption.
