The wife of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mrs. Uchechi Kanu, has shed light on why her husband, Nnamdi Kanu, apologized during a recent court session.
The apology followed events in Justice Binta Nyako’s court and was linked to the involvement of Kanu’s new counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN.
In a statement she personally signed, Mrs. Kanu explained that the need for an apology stemmed from Chief Agabi’s status and the importance of addressing the court in light of the previous altercations.
“In court today, my husband, Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, acknowledged the necessity for Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, the new lead counsel, to address the court of Justice James Omotosho regarding what transpired at Binta Nyako’s court, which shook the foundations of the Nigerian judiciary,” she said.
The statement further clarified that Kanu’s outbursts in Nyako’s court, driven by anger, had led to the recusal of the judge, making Agabi’s intervention crucial to restore decorum. “Chief Agabi, stepping into Onyendu’s brief, acted to smooth over the ruffled feathers in certain segments of the bar and bench,” she added.
Remarkably, Justice James Omotosho, who presided over the session, also apologized to Kanu for the delays and mishandling of his case.
“Chief Agabi’s intervention was strategic, balancing Onyendu’s fury with the dignity of the court,” Mrs. Kanu concluded.
