In a significant development, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja, Justice John Tsoho, has reassigned the case of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to a new judge.

This decision comes after Kanu’s legal team requested the recusal of the presiding judge, Justice Binta Nyako, citing concerns over the fairness of the trial.

Kanu had previously objected to Justice Nyako’s reassignment of the case back to herself after initially agreeing to recuse.

His legal team, led by Aloy Ejimakor, sought the intervention of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, who responded promptly, facilitating the reassignment of the case.

In a statement released on March 7, Ejimakor expressed gratitude to the Chief Justice of Nigeria for her swift administrative action and to the public for their support.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has always been ready to stand trial because he is firmly convinced of his innocence. However, the events of the past months posed significant dangers to his constitutional rights,” Ejimakor noted.

Now that the case has been reassigned, Kanu’s legal team is preparing to focus on his defense.
