The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has firmly opposed any attempt to position Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu, as the next governor of Lagos State.
This stance follows recent endorsements of Seyi as a potential candidate for the 2027 governorship elections by various groups.
Among the endorsers is the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders, which, in a statement issued in Owerri, Imo State on Tuesday, suggested that Seyi Tinubu could consider running for governor in Osun or Imo states, where his family reportedly has ties.
A socio-political group, Friends of Seyi Tinubu, also lent its support, praising his “visionary leadership, intellect, empathy, and strategic acumen.”However, these endorsements have sparked significant backlash.
In an interview with Punch, Lagos PDP spokesperson Hakeem Amode strongly rejected the idea of Seyi Tinubu becoming governor, calling it “unacceptable.”
He emphasized, “Lagos will not serve him. Governorship is not a gift.”
Amode further pointed out that many Lagosians had not supported Tinubu in the previous presidential election, suggesting that they would be unlikely to back his son for the governorship.Amode warned that if the Tinubu camp intends to use similar tactics as in states like Ondo and Edo, they will face “fierce resistance” in Lagos.
On the other hand, Seye Oladejo, spokesperson for the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), dismissed the current discussions as premature.
“It is too early to be discussing the 2027 elections,” he remarked, urging the public to focus on supporting the current government. “We should rally behind the governor and the president now to advance development,” he added.Meanwhile, prominent APC chieftain Joe Igbokwe also weighed in on the matter, questioning the motives behind the push for Seyi Tinubu’s governorship bid.
On his Facebook page, he wrote, “Who are these faceless people pushing Seyi Tinubu for Lagos Governor? This is a needless distraction. The real target is to bring down President Bola Tinubu. Ruling Lagos is not a job for amateurs.”
