Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has expressed his skepticism regarding the involvement of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State in the state House of Assembly’s move to impeach his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
The Ondo State House of Assembly has raised various allegations against Aiyedatiwa as part of the impeachment proceedings against him.
Aiyedatiwa had been acting as governor until September 7, 2023, when Governor Akeredolu returned from a three-month medical leave in Germany. Many have accused the governor of being behind the impeachment move.
In defense of the governor, Adegboruwa, who appeared as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today, stated that he believes Akeredolu has no intention of instigating political strife in the state. He acknowledged the nature of politics in Nigeria, where people often fabricate allegations for political reasons.
Adegboruwa emphasized Akeredolu’s courage, transparency, and accountability, asserting that he is not involved in the impeachment proceedings. He also expressed hope that Akeredolu would intervene to defuse the political tension and prioritize governance in the state.
Adegboruwa stressed the need for those in positions of authority to set aside personal interests for the sake of progress and unity in the political landscape. He pointed out that both the governor and the deputy belong to the same political party and that the governor’s intervention is crucial to resolve any alleged disloyalty during the deputy’s acting period.
On the other hand, Oshati Olatunji, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, who also appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today, clarified that the House of Assembly is not engaged in a witch-hunt of the Deputy Governor. He stated that their primary responsibility is to investigate the allegations of misconduct against him.
Olatunji emphasized that the House is not acting emotionally but rather fulfilling its duty to examine the petition received. He reiterated that their goal is to sanitize the system and that they have invited the Deputy Governor to defend himself within seven days.
